Last Week in Friendlies #6
A selection of quizzes published as friendlies in the last couple of days.
Since the last edition of Last Week in Friendlies was published, no less than 48 new question sets have been released! It’s impractical to do writeups for all of them here, so instead I’m using this edition to spotlight some of my favourite sets and those that have stood out for me in terms of either premise or execution or both. Disclaimer: One of these sets is my own, but I promise you it deserves to be here.
At the end of this post, there’s also a link to a Friendlies Checklist, a more comprehensive list of all Friendlies shared with the B612 community. Use it to keep track of what you’ve played!
This newsletter is only accessible to B612 paid subscribers and folks who played in the last season of the league. If you aren’t able to view it, ping me and I’ll help you out.
1. Calvin and Hobbes Hemimir by Ramesh Athreya
I'm a sucker for themed sets, and this one checks all the boxes. Ramesh Athreya, who I can only imagine is a long-time fan of the comic strip by Bill Watterson, has put together a 32-question set that works by simply blanking out certain words from comic panels and asking you to fill them in. The result is surprisingly accessible, and you should attempt this quiz even if you've never read a Calvin and Hobbes comic before.
A good themed set can create new fans and I would bet on this set creating a few.
In the same vein, Vivek Tejuja made a Simpsons Hemimir last month, again designed to be attempted by people who haven't watched the show, which makes sense when you consider how frequently Simpsons episodes just reference things from pop culture. This one barely scratches the surface of the Simpsons universe, and so we're all waiting for Simpsons #2, which could come from Vivek, but which could also come from you! Get started!
